Stresa History - A Story Shaped By The Lake

The Spring in Stresa
The Spring in Stresa

Stresa's story is closely connected with the history of Lake Maggiore, a natural crossroads between northern Italy and the Alpine world. For centuries, the lake provided routes for trade, fishing and travel, while its mild lakeside climate and beautiful scenery attracted wealthy families seeking country residences away from the larger cities.

Stresa appears in historical documents as early as 998. Over the centuries, the surrounding region passed through the influence of different powers and noble families. With the arrival of the railway through the Simplon Tunnel in 1906, Stresa became much easier to reach from Switzerland and central Europe. Grand hotels, villas and elegant gardens helped establish it as an internationally renowned holiday resort. More in stresaturismo.it

The most extraordinary chapter, however, belongs to the Borromeo family, an influential aristocratic family that acquired properties on the lake from the fourteenth century onwards. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the family began transforming the islands into a remarkable combination of private residences, ornamental gardens and carefully designed landscapes.

The family had three very different visions for the islands. Isola Bella would become a stage for aristocratic splendour, with a palace and grand terraces designed to impress visitors arriving by boat. Isola Madre would evolve into a peaceful botanical estate, taking advantage of the lake's relatively mild climate to cultivate unusual plants from around the world. Isola dei Pescatori, meanwhile, would retain its traditional village character and connection with fishing.

This is what makes a visit so rewarding: the islands are close together, yet each reveals a different way of life and a different relationship between people and the landscape. In a single day, you can move from Baroque grandeur to botanical Traquillity and then to the everyday rhythms of a lakeside fishing community.

1. ISOLA BELLA – BAROQUE GRANDEUR

Approaching Isola Bella by boat, the palace and its tiered terraces rise above the water like a grand theatrical set. The Borromeo family began transforming this once-rocky island in the seventeenth century, creating an ambitious composition of architecture, sculpture, fountains and gardens.

  • The Baroque gardens: Climb the ten monumental terraces arranged around the Teatro Massimo, with statues, fountains, obelisks and sculpted greenery. Look for the unicorn, a symbol associated with the Borromeo family.

  • Panoramic viewpoints: Pause on the upper terraces for sweeping views across Lake Maggiore towards the surrounding mountains.

Our tip

Don’t rush. The palace reveals the family’s ambitions; the terraces show the full scale of their vision. Allow around 1.5–2.5 hours.

Official information and tickets: Terre Borromeo – Isola Bella. The 2026 season is listed as 12 March to 8 November, with shorter visiting hours towards the end of the season. Check the official schedule before travelling.

2. ISOLA MADRE – A BOTANICAL ESCAPE

After Isola Bella’s drama, Isola Madre offers space to slow down. It is the largest of the Borromean Islands, known for its winding garden paths, mature trees, exotic plants and peaceful atmosphere.

The Borromeo family developed the island over centuries. Its favourable microclimate supports a rich variety of plants, and the landscape has evolved into an elegant botanical garden.

What to see

  • Botanical gardens: Wander among camellias, azaleas, rhododendrons, wisteria and other plants that thrive in the lake’s mild climate. Each season brings a different display.

  • The Kashmir cypress: Find the celebrated tree that was uprooted by a violent storm in 2006 and later preserved and stabilised through a major conservation effort.

  • Birdlife: Watch for ornamental birds, including white peacocks and colourful pheasants.

  • Palazzo Borromeo: Explore period furnishings, decorative rooms and collections that reveal the family’s private world. The puppet and marionette displays are a distinctive highlight.

Our tip

This is the island for garden lovers, photographers and anyone who enjoys wandering without a timetable. Allow around 1.5–2 hours.

Official information and tickets: Terre Borromeo – Isola Madre. The 2026 season is listed as 12 March to 8 November, subject to the published opening schedule.

3. ISOLA DEI PESCATORI – AUTHENTIC ISLAND LIFE

Also known as Isola Superiore, Isola dei Pescatori is the most rooted in everyday life. Unlike its aristocratic neighbours, it has long been home to a fishing community and remains the only main Borromean Island inhabited throughout the year.

Its appeal is simple: stone lanes, traditional houses with balconies, little shops and restaurants close to the water. Leave room in your schedule to wander.

What to do

  • Explore the old village: Follow the narrow lanes away from the landing point and discover traditional buildings and quiet corners.

  • Visit the Church of San Vittore: Take a short cultural pause in this historic church at the heart of village life.

  • Enjoy a lakeside lunch: Try freshwater fish and regional flavours at a table beside the water.

  • Browse the shops: Find local crafts and souvenirs inspired by life on the lake.

Our tip

Make this your lunch stop and linger afterwards. In summer, reserve a table if you have a particular restaurant in mind.

Local tradition

On 15 August, the Feast of the Assumption, the island holds a celebrated religious procession associated with the lake and fishing community. Check local information for details in the year you visit.

4. STRESA – THE PLEASURE OF LAKESIDE LIVING

Don’t treat Stresa as just the place where you catch the boat. Its promenade, elegant hotels, flower beds, cafés and historic buildings are part of the experience. They recall the era when aristocrats and international travellers came to Lake Maggiore for extended holidays.

Extra tips for your visit

Choose the right season

Spring is wonderful for flowering gardens, while summer brings lively waterfronts and long days. September and early October can be excellent for a more relaxed atmosphere. The island palaces and gardens are seasonal attractions: in 2026, the official season is scheduled from 12 March to 8 November.

Plan your boat connections

Check the public boat timetable before leaving Stresa, and pay attention to the final departures. If you want to visit all three islands, begin early and allow enough time for the palace and gardens. Private taxi boats offer greater flexibility but may cost more.

Check tickets before travelling

Palace and garden admission is separate from boat transport unless you buy a package that explicitly includes both. Check combined tickets and book ahead during busy weekends or public holidays. Current prices and opening times are published on the official Terre Borromeo website.

Wear comfortable shoes

The islands involve walking on stone paths, steps and garden terraces. Isola Bella, in particular, has several levels, while the village lanes on Isola dei Pescatori can be narrow and uneven.

Be prepared for changing weather

The lake can be sunny while the surrounding mountains are covered by clouds. Bring sun protection in summer and a light waterproof layer in spring and autumn. Boat services and outdoor plans may be affected by weather.

Bring your camera — but pause, too

The palace terraces, island approaches and lakeside promenades offer wonderful photographic opportunities. Remember to put the camera away occasionally and enjoy the views without a lens between you and the landscape.

Enjoy the local cuisine

Try freshwater fish from the lake, regional cheeses, risotto and Piedmontese specialities. On Isola dei Pescatori, a leisurely lunch beside the water is part of the experience.

Best time to visit

Spring — March to May

A lovely time for gardens, fresh greenery and seasonal flowers. Check the opening dates, as the islands' main attractions do not operate year-round.

Summer — June to August

The liveliest season, with long daylight hours and frequent boat services. Expect more visitors, particularly around weekends and holidays.

Autumn — September to early November

Often a rewarding choice for softer light and a more relaxed atmosphere. Confirm the seasonal closing dates and shorter opening hours towards November.

Winter — late November to February

Stresa can still be a peaceful lakeside escape, but the palace and garden attractions on the Borromean Islands are generally closed during this period. Enjoy the town and wider lake region instead.

Closing statement – Take home the feeling of Lake Maggiore

Stresa and the Borromean Islands are more than a collection of beautiful places. They are an invitation to experience Italy at a gentler pace — to travel by boat, wander through historic gardens, discover the stories behind magnificent palaces and enjoy a long lunch in a village where the lake remains part of everyday life.

Each island offers a different memory. Isola Bella leaves you with images of Baroque splendour and sweeping terraces. Isola Madre invites you to slow down among exotic plants and peaceful garden paths. Isola dei Pescatori brings you closer to the traditions, flavours and rhythms of the lake. And Stresa welcomes you back with its elegant promenade, cafés and beautiful evening light.

Our 4BTravelGuide recommendation: If you can, stay at least one night. Visit the islands during the day, then return to Stresa for an aperitivo as the sun begins to set behind the mountains. That is when the journey becomes more than sightseeing — it becomes a memory of the Italian Lakes, filled with beauty, discovery and Traquillity.
