Beautiful Brissago's Churches

Chiesa Di Santa Maria Di Ponte Church, Brissago

Located south of the village, the Oratory of Santa Maria (Chiesa Di Santa Maria Di Ponte Church) dates back to the 13th century and was reconstructed by architect Giovanni Beretta between 1526 and 1585, later continued by his son Pietro.

The church features a south-facing courtyard, with authentic elements on the southern side and the east terminal tribune, forming a Latin cross. Its bell tower and continuous loggia surrounding the octagonal dome (inspired by Bramante) are accentuated by granite corner pilasters.

The southern side has two portals: a smaller one from 1528 and a rebuilt one from 1591, featuring large Tuscan columns. Inside, the nave is divided into three sections, with a ribbed vault in the center and barrel vaults on the sides. The main altar displays a fresco of the Assumption of Mary (1569), while the restored chapel features an ornate Baroque altar dedicated to the Assumption, crafted by G. Pietro Fossati (1682-1684). The oratory is open from Easter to September, with irregular hours.

The tranquil waters of Lake Maggiore mirror the azure sky above, while the snow-capped peaks of the nearby mountains stand as a testament to the region's alpine heritage. This scene epitomizes the beauty of Switzerland's diverse natural landscapes.

In the heart of winter, Brissago showcases a stunning display of blooming camellias, transforming the village into a vibrant oasis against the backdrop of the colder months.
