History of Brissago

Historically, Brissago was known for its strategic position along trade routes between the Italian and Swiss regions. Its mild climate and fertile lands made it an attractive settlement for agricultural activities, particularly in vine-growing, which remains an important part of the region's identity.

Brissago was first mentioned in 1289 as Brixago.

An independent republic in Brissago was proclaimed in 1520, and it became an associate of the Swiss Confederation.

In the Middle Ages, Brissago's economy was based on farming, animal husbandry, and trade, with mills and sawmills established by the 13th century. In the 15th century, many locals emigrated to Milan and Tuscany, later returning as cooks and hoteliers.

The opening of a tobacco factory in 1856 marked a shift in the village’s economy, with industrial growth peaking in the early 20th century. As tourism grew, especially after the 1907 construction of the Grande Albergo hotel, Brissago became a resort town.

By the 1960s and 70s, the town expanded into the hills, and the service sector took over as the main economic driver.
