Updates 30 June 2024 - Tragedy in Fontana Village, Maggia Valley On June 30, 2024, a devastating landslide hit the Maggia Valley in southern Switzerland after heavy thunderstorms dropped 200 litres of rain per square meter in 24 hours. The landslide blocked the cantonal road and caused a bridge collapse in Visletto, rendering several side valleys inaccessible. Put San Carlo in GPS.


  • From Zurich: Take a train from Zurich to Bellinzona (approx. 1 hr 45 min). From Bellinzona, transfer to a regional train to Locarno (approx. 20 min). From Locarno, take a bus (Line 315) towards Cavergno-San Carlo, which will bring you to Val Bavona.

  • From Abroad: Fly into Zurich or Milan Malpensa. From Milan, take a train to Bellinzona and follow the same route as above.


By Train and Bus:

  • The nearest Train Station: Locarno.

  • Bus Connections: Regular buses from Locarno to Cavergno and San Carlo, with stops in Foroglio.

By Car:

  • Drive from Locarno (~45 minutes) along the scenic Vallemaggia road. Parking is available at most village entrances.

By Bicycle (Velo):
